Route 66 Points of Interest in Missouri Gateway Arch - St. Louis, Missouri Finally completed in 1965, the idea for erecting a monument to westward expansion on the St. Louis riverfront dates back to 1933. Architect: Eero Saarinen and Associates. Landcape architect Dan Kiley collaborted with Saarinen on the remarkable Arch grounds. Between the legs of the Arch is the underground Museum of Western Expansion, nearly as large as a football field. Within walking distance are the the Eads Bridge, the Old Courthouse, Kiener Plaza, Laclede's Landing, the Old Cathedral, the SS Admiral, and the trailhead for the St. Louis Riverfront Trail.
