Paid Parking Starts May 1st 2006 at Old Chain of Rocks Bridge
St. Louis, MO – Trailnet is enhancing the visitor experience at the Missouri entrance to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge by providing monitored parking and improved visitor amenities. St. Louis Parking will provide monitored fee-based parking at the bridge beginning May 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking fees will be $2 per vehicle and $10 for 15-passenger or larger vehicles. Walkers and bicyclists entering the Bridge from the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and the MCT Confluence Trail will not be charged.
"We decided to provide this service to ensure a convenient and comfortable parking experience for those visiting the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge," said Wayne Goode, President of the Trailnet board of directors. "The bridge will continue to be open during regular operating hours, a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. The lot will be monitored from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., when the parking fee is in effect."
"Trailnet in partnership with the Great Rivers Greenway District and the City of Madison, Illinois is subsidizing access to the Bridge as a service to our region in support of offering cyclists and walkers access across the Mississippi River," said Ann Mack, Executive Director. "We are also exploring offering a frequent visitor parking pass."
The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge was renovated and re-opened as a bicycle/pedestrian bridge by Trailnet and the City of Madison, Illinois in 1999. For many decades the Bridge was a key link in the beloved Route 66. Today the Bridge is the centerpiece of The Confluence Greenway, a magnificent riverside conservation, heritage and recreation corridor being developed in the heart of the bi-state community. The Bridge is also a vital link connecting trails on both sides of the river. Improvements to the Bridge include themed bump-outs, full span pedestrian lighting, restrooms and informational signage.
Events held throughout the year include Eagle Days in January, bike rides, walks, runs and Route 66 Motor Tours. For more information on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge visit Trailnet’s website at www.trailnet.org.
Trailnet seeks to enrich the St. Louis bi-state region by promoting bicycle and pedestrian activities and collaborating with the public and private sectors to ensure and enhance a premier trail system.
