February 22, 2004 - Action Alert - Meadow Gold Sign in Tulsa: The building that the sign is on has a new owner who wants the sign moved. He has donated the sign free of charge if funds can be raised quickly to move it to a new location. Details on the Freinds of the Mother Road web site.

The CD "A Ribbon In Time" of original Route 66 songs written and sung by artist Buenger Dickson is on sale to benefit the 11st Street Bridge in Tulsa, which will be rededicated as the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge on June 11, 2004. Visit the web site for more information.

April 22-25, 2004: Preserving the Historic Road in America, at the Historic Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Important dialogue on effective tools and techniques for balancing use and safety with preservation. For engineers, designers, transportation and preservation professionals and anyone interested in historic roads. June 17-19, 2004: Illinois Annual Statewide Preservation Conference at the Pere Marquette Lodge at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The annual preservation conference attracts the participation of preservation professionals, advocates and interested citizens from across the state. Route 66 Re-Commissioning Initiative - Read about a plan to bring back Route 66.

The owner of John's Modern Cabins is interested in preserving them and has begun replacing the well house roof and shoring up the cabins as much as his time and finances will allow. Anyone who would like to donate money toward this cause should send a donation to: Friends of the Mother Road. Donations are tax-deductible. Please include a note explaining that you want this money to be used for John's Modern Cabins, and we will make sure it goes toward that cause. The property owner has received a $250 Founders' Grant from Friends of the Mother Road to help with his project, but this is only a drop in the bucket; any and all donations will be greatly appreciated.

The Porsche Cayenne Crossing Initiative is working to revitalize America's roads and trails, including a portion of Route 66 in California. Online sign-up is available to receive news and offer your assistance.

We the People Grant Initiative: The National Endowment for the Humanities encourages scholars, teachers, filmmakers, curators, and librarians to submit grant applications that explore significant events and themes in our nation's history and culture and that advance knowledge of the principles that define America.

Restoration of the U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, Texas is well under way. The City of Shamrock is seeking reproduction signs, historic pumps and other gas station memorabila that were not included in the grant that made the restoration possible.
