New Committee Forming To Lead Preservation Efforts
    Spring 2002

At the recent meeting of the Board of Directors, your Association decided to form a new committee, known tentatively as the CCC (Conservation and Continuation Committee), to spearhead Route 66 preservation efforts in Missouri.

Instead of attempting to restore or save properties on its own, the Association will serve as a facilitator or go-between to help ensure that properties are preserved, and funds are obtained and available for the types of projects outlined in the Route 66 Study Act of 1999. The CCC is being established with a four-fold purpose:
    1. Identify properties and road segments for preservation/restoration,
    2. Solicit matching funds and other types of grants for studying and preserving properties or roadbeds,
    3. Coordinate efforts of other not-for-profit organizations and government entities to obtain available funds, &
    4. Prepare national register nominations.

The activities of the existing ad hoc Preservation Committee will be continued as a sub-committee of the CCC.

We will also encourage certain outside parties to become members of this committee – and the Association. For example, landmarks associations, history museums, local architects, visitor/ tourism bureaus, chambers of commerce, a sprinkling of politicians, etc.

In this regard, the Board of Directors established a policy whereby members of the Association are not permitted to ask for or request funds on behalf or using the name of the Association from local, state or federal politicians or agencies unless approved in advance by the CCC or Board of Directors.

Please contact Tommy Pike if you have any questions or comments, or would like to volunteer for the CCC.
