Corridor Management Plan Update
The next step in the CMP process is the required Public Meetings in each of the Missouri Route 66 Counties. These have been scheduled for January and February 2010.
MISSOURI HISTORIC ROUTE 66 BYWAY CORRIDOR MANAGEMENT PLAN
A Corridor Management Plan is a required element of a byway and outlines plans to involve the local communities and maintain, improve and promote the byway. It states the vision, strategies and theme for the byway. The Corridor Management Plan also contains vision statements on ways to maintain, enhance or develop the intrinsic qualities of the roadway corridor.
This project will fund the development of an 10-county corridor management plan for the Missouri Historic Route 66 Byway. The plan will identify measures consistent with those previously implemented by neighboring states along the Route 66 corridor and necessary for an National Byway designation. The project details include these tasks: collect and review data about the history, culture, and natural features of the byway; develop comprehensive long-range promotional plan; and develop a business plan to guide long-term "Main Street" economic revitalization programs in each Route 66 community (with local buy-ins).
The plan will include( l) an assessment of Route 66's cultural and historic resources of interest to byway visitors, (2) the factors influencing past and future byway related economic and infrastructure development and (3) recommendations for improving the efficiency of transportation along this byway to serve byway visitors.
The Corridor Management Plan (CMP) project continues to progress under the capable hands of Great River Engineering. Many things are included in this process. Data is being collected and processed to be included in the final report. A map of Missouri Route 66 with many layers of information is being prepared. A survey to be returned to Great River, was included in the last mailing to gain information on travel practices on Missouri 66. When the CMP is completed, it will be available to any entity for use in their economic development plans. AND, last but not least, there must be a CMP in place before application can be made for National Byway Status. Great River will help with this application process.
Great River Engineering has developed a web site specific to this CMP http://Route66.greatrivereng.com. You are encouraged to take time to look at this site and register so you may get updates and news on the progress of the CMP. The map and other data are also available on the web site.
The next step in the CMP process is the required Public Meetings in each of the Missouri Route 66 Counties. These have been scheduled for January and February 2010. These Public Meetings are a required vital part of the CMP and are explained below by Jerany Jackson, Great River Engineering. Included is a schedule for each meeting. All government officials, business owners as well as interested individuals are urged to attend any or all of the meetings which will be presented by Great River. Everyone's input is important. Each Route 66 Association of Missouri member should invite their officials and local business owners and your presence at one or more meetings is encouraged. Members should keep a record of the time spent in making contacts and report it to me by email, so your time can be counted as part of our matching funds (cost) payment of the grant for the CMP.

The Public Meetings that will be held for the Corridor Management Plan (CMP) are critical to the overall process and the end product. In fact, in order for the Route 66 Association of Missouri to make application for the National Byway Program, a CMP must be completed and in place. The public meetings are a critical part of the plan. Visiting each county and giving the public an opportunity to weigh in on the preservation, protection, and promotion opportunities for the Route 66 corridor will allow Great River to provide better tools for each county individually to implement strategies.
Ultimately one of the largest goals of the Corridor Management Plan is to focus on the economic development opportunities that may exist in the corridor. The public plays a key role in helping to identify unique opportunities that we may not be aware of in our field observation. We encourage public participation in these meetings in an effort to gain more complete knowledge of each county so that the corridor management plan will ultimately be a useful tool for all.
Community involvement through participation in the public meetings is important not only to gain new ideas, but to further improve community empowerment enhancing existing and proposed project features.
Determining community needs increases support and acceptance and reduces concerns, fears, and false rumors that can negatively impact the success of a project. The process of proper information and reciprocal dialog determines successful community involvement. Only a properly informed community can be a positive asset in the process of developing the CMP.
