  • Complete the online form, provide your VIN, current plate details (if applicable), desired plate text (up to 6 characters—letters, numbers, or hyphens), select a license office, and pay via credit card or ACH. Application takes about 10–15 minutes. We handle submission to the MO DOR and your new plate will be delivered to your chosen office.

  • You’ll need:

    • Vehicle VIN

    • Your name and address

    • Desired plate text (max 6 characters: letters, numbers, hyphens)

    • Selected license office

    The six‑character limit is due to the space taken by the Route 66 emblem.

    • 1‑year option: $35 to the Route 66 Association (emblem usage) + $15 DOR personalized plate fee = $50, plus standard registration fees.

    • 2‑year option: $70 (emblem) + $15 DOR fee = $85, plus standard registration fees.

    Plates renew each July—either annually or every two years depending on vehicle model year.

  • Your existing registration will be prorated and applied to your new black plate. Renewals will move to the July timeframe for all specialty plates.

  • Available for:

    • Passenger cars

    • Motorcycles/motor tricycles

    • RVs

    • Light & medium trucks up to 24,000 lb GVW
      Not eligible: buses, trailers, historic plated vehicles, heavy trucks over 24,000 lb.

  • Yes. You can transfer to a new vehicle using MO DOR Form 184. To change text, submit your first three plate choices—if available, the DOR will issue one of them.

  • The black Route 66 plate is only available for vehicles registered and titled in Missouri.

  • There is no expedited processing or application window—you can apply anytime. Plates typically arrive in 6-8 weeks at your selected license office.
