Dear Route 66 Association of Missouri Member:

The Route 66 Association of Missouri’s mantra is to PRESERVE and promote Route 66 in Missouri. As far as preserving Route 66 goes, that means preserving what is left of the motels, restaurants, businesses, and other icons which, because you pass them, you realize that this is not just a nondescript ribbon of concrete. It drew civilization to or near its roadsides, and those “draws” need to be saved so that future generations will be able to understand how special Route 66 is to Missouri and this country.

One person who understood this was Jane Dippel. She joined the Route 66 Association of Missouri in 1991 and devoted her life to our beloved Mother Road. One of her biggest contributions was the establishment of the Historic Preservation Committee. Through raffles at meetings, to donation requests, to Jane’s affectionate strong-arming, the Historic Preservation Committee has made donations to the efforts of many individuals and businesses to maintain and preserve their place in the History of Route 66 in Missouri.

The appropriately named Jane Dippel Historic Preservation Award will continue in Jane’s spirit, and we hope it will continue to preserve what is left on or near Route 66 in Missouri. Everyone who is doing anything to save any portion of Route 66 is urged to review the application and if you qualify, apply for an award.

If you have any questions or issues to discuss, please email Kip Welborn at rudkip@sbcglobal.net or call him at 314-853-7385.

We look forward to hearing from you.
